Our friends over at ShoreTel posted a fantastic guide to VoIP for businesses. So often, in our experience, customers have a fuzzy, at best, understanding of VoIP phone systems, how they work, why they’ve valuable to business, and how they can save money and attain communications reliability with a VoIP system.

Genesis BCS has been selling VoIP phone systems and ShoreTel to Houston and Texas businesses for going on six years now: installing

As for the basics, ShoreTel describes the differences between a traditional phone line versus an IP line like the difference between a record player and an iPod. On the surface, they both play music, but looking deeper, the differences become stark. An iPod can create playlists, skip easily to the next song, is mobile, and can hold tens of thousands of songs. All of these features are things that make listening to music on iPods a much more powerful experience.

VoIP Phone System Features

Similarly: a VoIP phone system offers users features that a traditional phone system is simply unable to match. Traditional PBX phone systems are good for basic communications functions like calling and faxing, but they are highly inflexible, expensive to expand, and can leave you unable to communicate in the event of hurricanes and other natural disasters (something Houston knows too well).

Conversely, VoIP phone systems usually:

  • Include Unified Communications
  • Are Inherently Redundant
  • Reduce Costs
  • Are Easily Expandable
