Super Bowl XLIX was spectacularly illuminated with LED lights for the first time in history! The University of Phoenix Stadium, which is where the Super Bowl took place, had a previous lighting system that consisted of 780 light fixtures (a 1.24 million watt system) and was demanding a lot of money, maintenance and energy. Oddly enough, even with that many light fixtures the lighting was still lacking in uniformity.
The new LED installation only uses 312 LED fixtures and consumes much less energy (about 310,000 watts).
So aside from saving a lot of money on the stadium’s energy bill, the new LED installation provided the audience, the players, the coaches, the referees, and even the commentators the utmost vivid clarity when watching the game this past Sunday. Whether the game was watched on a television or live,
viewers were able to see every single play-by-play in vibrant, clear, and bright colors thanks to the new lighting system. Another great benefit of the new LEDs is that they helped keep distracting shadows away from the field during the game. This comes in handy when replaying and slowing down certain plays for review.
Scott Norton, director of marketing for Global Spectrum at University of Phoenix Stadium said, “It’s really a no-brainer when you look at the technology and what it does. LED is the way of the future.”
So regardless of whether you were rooting for the Seahawks or the Patriots to win this year, I think we can all agree that Super Bowl XLIX was, without a doubt, an amazing game. And amazing games like that should only be viewed and played under the best lighting.
