Networking at OTC
As anybody who’s lived in Houston long knows: the Offshore Technology Conference is upon us! Emily Wilkinson over at the Houston Business Journal wrote out some great tips on how to network like a pro!
1. Do your research: The success of an event can often be determined by the amount of preparation beforehand.
2. Sip, don’t slurp! – Decide your drinking policy before you arrive at the event, and stick with it.
3. Split up – If you come with a networking partner, split up! You’ll meet more people and won’t intimidate others who have turned up solo.
4. Practice your elevator pitch – Your elevator speech is the 30 seconds when you own the floor. Don’t waste it!
5. Stand by the buffet – Buffets are to networking events as bars are to nights out. They attract people.
6. Put your phone away – Your phone belongs in your pocket, preferably on silent mode.
7. Make eye contact – Keep your eyes fixed on who you’re talking to.
8. Follow up – The most important part of networking happens after the event.
