Glenn Leibowitz, a contributor for Inc.com, recently had an interview with the CEO of WordPress. That online website creation tool that powers well over 25 percent of the internet, that is also owned by Automattic, a company worth more than $1 billion dollars today. In the interview, CEO Matt Mullenweg stated, “Automattic is a totally distributed company, so everyone works from wherever they are in the world. It could be a coffee shop, it could be their home, it could be a co-working space. We hire people regardless of where they are. We now have folks in just over 40 countries. This has been amazing for the company in that we can attract and retain the best talent without them having to be in New York or San Francisco or one of the traditional tech enters.” So this strategy of operation seems to work extremely well for Automattic. Not having an office in any particular location can free your company for more employing opportunities. One could imagine this could save your business or company a lot of money in many different ways. Though company expenses may be very low for the standard expenses other companies face, traveling expenses could be filling a portion of that gap. With that considered and the addition of the salary for 400 employees around the world, Matt’s company probably saves a lot more money than other companies.
Can any business or company be capable of operating without a particular set location for an office? Some business and companies require some kind of facility with having to sell products of all kinds. Though there are many business and companies today that are based strictly online. Could they escape the expenses of an office? Having an office or a set location can do a lot for a business, while being location free can also do a lot for your business. Communication can be much easier and more fast paced with an office, and the productivity could be on a completely different level compared to having employees work from home or wherever they choose. The characteristics of the business play a lot into that situation. Though many businesses and companies depend only on the internet for communication, there will always be businesses and companies that depend on phone systems and wireless internet systems to keep things functioning.
