More LED Lighting has been implemented to help make Houston more energy efficient. The Westchase Mangement District is in its final stage of putting in its new 24-hour LED Lighting System to the Beltway underpass at Westheimer. This is the 5th and final underpass to be retrofitted in the project that started in 2009.
The most unique aspect of the project is the solar cell system that is implemented into the lighting system. Most underpass systems have always been controlled by timers. You set a time for them to turn on and a time for them to turn off. This new solar cell system detects light levels surrounding the underpass’s lighting system. This then allows it to adjust the lighting levels according to the outside light. This makes the new LED lighting system more energy efficient.
With this combination also comes increased safety for both motorists and pedestrians. This is because the lights will also know when to turn on due to weather circumstances such as overcast. So no matter what the situation, the lights will adjust promptly.
The final cost of the new lighting system, which was paid for by the Westchase Management District, came out to be just over $129,000.
